Tesla Charger Installation – In today’s climate, energy and fuel costs are big factors considering the cost of everyday living. Recent developments have caused petrol and gas prices to skyrocket, and our concerns for climate change and sustainability have led to more people looking at alternative sources of power.
One avenue of exploration has been in the area of electric vehicles. Today, electric vehicles (such as Teslas) are found in many homes and are becoming an essential item for many families seeking to reduce energy and fuel consumption.
This blog looks at three things you should consider before investing in a Tesla electric vehicle and installing a Tesla Charger into your home.
1. There are two Tesla Home Charging Options
For charging your Tesla vehicle at home, there are two options:
a) Tesla Mobile Connector – All Tesla vehicles come with a “mobile connector” as standard. The mobile connector can charge your electric vehicle at any standard home electrical outlet using a 15A plug. The mobile connector is convenient for when you find yourself unable to access high-speed chargers or when visiting friends; however, they are very slow charging and not a feasible option as a long-term solution. You gain about 10km of driving range per hour of charge.
b) Tesla Wall Connector – The Tesla Wall Connector offers a maximum 32 amp output, which translates to up to 71km of driving range per hour of charge. That is over seven times as fast as the standard mobile connector! A qualified electrician must install the wall connector but provides the best experience for charging your Tesla vehicle.
2. You Do Not Need 3 Phase Power (but it helps!)
When it comes to installing a Tesla Wall Connector charger, it is important to note that they can be installed in any home without needing to change your electrical system. However, the performance of the Tesla Wall Connector is greatly improved with increased amperage.
Power Trip can inspect your home’s electrical system to determine your capacity, possibly charging output and safe installation of your wall connector.
According to Tesla, here is how your charging speed varies according to the power levels at your home:
Output Power | Power Settings | Range added per hour* (km/h) | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Power (kW) | Phase + Amps | Model 3 | Model S | Model X |
16.5 | 3 phase 24A | 75 | 90 | 80 |
11 | 3 phase 16A | 75 | 60 | 54 |
7.4 | Single-phase 32A | 50 | 38 | 34 |
3.7 | Single-phase 16A | 25 | 19 | 17 |
2.3 | Single-phase 10A | 15 | 13 | 11 |
3. It Only Takes a Few Hours to Install
With a qualified technician on hand to do your Tesla charger installation, the entire process will be free of headaches and completed in a short time. Your Power Trip technician will not only install the wall connector but will use their smartphone to “commission” (aka activate) it to enable it to charge a vehicle. It will be connected to your home wifi to allow firmware updates and communication with the Tesla app.
Your Tesla charger installation may also include a quick rundown of using the Tesla app to monitor your vehicle.
Using the Tesla app, you can have real-time access to many of your car’s features from your phone handset. Still, it also allows you to monitor your charging stats, your vehicle’s behaviour and even view the estimated financial savings of not needing to fuel your car with petrol or diesel.
